Sonoma County, a 90-minute drive from San Francisco, offers visitors an abundance of wineries, beautiful coastlines, deluxe spas, magnificent redwood parks, and mystical rivers. Sonoma is definitely a tourist destination, with plenty to do and see in an area the size of Rhode Island. Here are five different ways to enjoy the sights of this large and magnificent county.
Sonoma by Air
See Sonoma from above with a vintage aircraft or balloon tour. On my last trip, we took a tour with Captain Chuck of A Balloon Over Sonoma. Tours begin in early morning when the winds are soft and gentle. Before taking to the skies, passengers witness the balloon inflate from a small colorful bag to a majestic balloon of many colors. The hot air balloon is aloft for an hour of aerial sightseeing capped off with a champagne brunch. Balloons are a unique way to see the many vineyards in the area, but if the wind isn’t cooperative, your tour may take you over subdivisions and other less scenic points. If you don’t want to take your chances with the wind, a ride in a WWII open cockpit plane will also give you similar views and thrills.
Biking through Sonoma
Cycling tours of Sonoma County are quite popular. On a wine-themed bike tour, you will have the opportunity to see how wine is made as you cycle from vineyard to vineyard. You may even get a chance to sample the product. Most bike tours provide cycling equipment (bikes and helmets), unlimited water, and a gourmet lunch. Novice bikers can request tours to accommodate their skill level. Bike tours are great girlfriend getaways—you can bond as you learn about viticulture and burn calories.
River Tours of Sonoma
Kayaking down Sonoma county’s Russian River is a great way to experience the area. River tours begin in the morning with an equipment fitting followed by a quick paddling lesson. Then you are off! The scenery along the Russian River constantly changes from thick forests to wide open areas lined with vineyards. Wildlife is abundant—–kayakers can spot Blue Herons, turtles, and even otters. If the whether and your guide permit, you may be able to stop along the route for some sightseeing or a swim. Many of the tours also include a gourmet beach picnic.
Hiking in Sonoma
With Armstrong Redwoods State Park located in Sonoma County, Redwood Hikes are a popular activity. Getting a cardio workout among the majestic redwoods is an experience like no other. You can look up and up, and up—the trees seem to extend into the clouds. Many days, the trees are surrounded by a fog that adds to the awe-inspiring beauty of the place. Put your hiking shoes on and enjoy one of the many hiking and nature trails in this amazing state park.
Sonoma Beach Walks
Beach enthusiasts will enjoy coastal walks along the Pacific Ocean. Coastwalk, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to protect coastal places, organizes day and overnight walking trips for individuals and families. My family loves the beach and the ocean, and once my children are older I plan to take them on an active and educational Coastwalk (the recommended age is 9).
