Added Jun 09, 2009And what did you wear? I was obsessed with what I thought were unsightly dark circles (which I now don't give a hoot about) and walked around with circles of concealer that were two shades lighter than my skintone! And super-heavy eyeliner. A lovely look, I'm sure. No wonder there are so few photos of me from that period!

I wanted to start wearing makeup MUCH sooner than my mom was ready for me to start wearing it. Attending a Catholic School, it was just not allowed in school. I think it was around age 12 that I started experimenting with making my own makeup. The ingredients: (Get this!) Baby powder, water, and food coloring. I mixed it together to form a paste and when it dried, it was powdery. Or sort of powdery anyway. Blue and green for the eye shadow and red for the blush. I had no use for the yellow. And I would wear Bonnie Bell lipsmackers on my lips or tons of Vaseline instead of lipgloss.
Talk about a lovely look! At least you were using products from the drugstore!

I started wearing make-up around 14. I did the same thing with the circles under my eyes. The only other things I wore were eyliner and lip gloss.

I started wearing makeup a little here and there in college- the requisite dark lipstick (film noir by MAC) and the occasional eyeliner. But since I was just a disaster at application it was a rare occasion for me to do more than some eyeliner. Now I wear makeup only about 1 or 2 times a week- eyes, lips, and a bronzer- for no particular reason other than fun. I only do it full-on if I am performing, have a date with my husband, attend an event or are just super bored at home. My facialists attribute my having great skin (they said, it not me) to wearing so little makeup and never wearing foundation- so I am sticking to that. But in general about imperfections etc I'm in the not giving much of a hoot camp since i clearly lack the skill to try and hide them.

I've loved makeup since I was about 10 or 11, wasn't allowed to wear it (outside of the house) until I was 15 (a waterproof mascara and dab of concealer was all I sported at the time), and have experimented with various brands, shades and looks since I was 17 or 18. All of my self-training has paid off: I work as a freelance beauty writer and editor, test brand new products before they hit the market and am often the "go to" for friends who need a quick cat eye or contoured cheek. It's not about how much you wear; it's about how you wear it and how you feel in it. I hardly wear any during the day; I love to try out new trends at night; and would gladly spend $500 in Sephora than I would at a clothing boutique, any day.
