Added Dec 03, 2009In desperation for my ever-darkening eye area, I've been experimenting. Just wanted to let you know a couple new products I've picked up and am trying to camouflage my eye area. Thought maybe with party season here you might want someone's input if you see them in the store. But remember--I am NOT a cover girl, nor have I ever worn makeup consistently. (Except in the 80s, but from an era that as long as you had your 5-gallon bucket of eyeliner you were golden, I don't think that counts.)
* Neutrogena 3-in-1 concealer for eyes: I dab some on a cotton swab, put 3 dots on my eyelid, and smooth out. I do this after I have washed my face and put moisturizer on my eyelids. My completely non-professional rating: unimpressive. It brightens the area (which I need), but it doesn't seem to smooth the texture of the delicate skin.
* Revlon Spa Age-defying concealer: same sort of concept as the Neutrogena, but with a self-filling brush you paint on. My bumbling rating: I wish they would have foregone the fancy self-applier and given me more product. However, it works better at being smooth (over how the Neutrogena appears) and seems to be more solid color.
* L'Oreal Wear Infinite' eyeshow, perle colors 802 and 806: I basically bought shadow that matched my skin color and then bought something just a hair darker. The lighter color I use for the eyelid, the darker under my eye (I brush it completely from corner to corner of my under eye.) Surprisingly, this seems to give me a better look. I'd rate it even with the Revlon, but it's cheaper as long as I put it on a minute or two after I moisturize my eyes--makes it last the same length of time as the other liquids.
And thanks to Karyn Polewaczyk (who referred me to a site called Kiehl's for another productwww.innerrewards.com...), I stumbled on something I picked up simply to try when I was buying the other product: Kiehl's Eye Alert "Energy Booster to Combat Puffiness and Dark Circles." I've been using it about a week every morning underneath my eye moisturizer and believe things are looking smoother. Not sure about the dark circles, but I like the texture change. It uses cucumber and alfalfa extracts along with vitamin E and caffeine. My very inexperienced-in-this-area rating: Superb--buy it!

Ugh Caroline I suffer from the same issue and it's my biggest beauty pet peeve. So far I haven't found any topical product that does the job, or even makes a noticeable dent in the problem. However, Restylane injected in the tear troughs under the eyes has. Yes somewhat expensive upfront ($500-$800 in NYC) but it can last up to one year and makes a true noticeable difference. Especially good for those over thirty who are experiencing loss of fat and hollowing under eyes. The injections reduce the look of dark circles significantly and fills in the concavity under the eyes that naturally develops as we age. Just make sure you do thorough research on the doctor doing the injecting. This is a very delicate area and if not injected properly, can do more harm than good. But if it is done right--bye bye creams and concealers. For a year at least!

Good question. Again it goes back to finding the right doctor. An expert with this type of injection will most likely numb under your eyes with a numbing cream first, and then give you a dental block so you should feel very little pain, if any. One doctor I know of in NYC actually injects through the mouth and under the cheek if you can believe it, and claims it to be virtually pain free. Here is a video just to get you prpared. Warning, not for the faint of heartwww.youtube.com/watc...
Personally, I would rate the pain a 5 on the scale of 1 to 10, but worth it.
