Added Nov 05, 2008I live in NYC and have been looking for a place that can perform laser hair removal and maybe even laser skin services on African American skin. Several clinics have told me that their equipment will not safely work on me. Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences to share?

Well, I keep hearing that the reason laser hair removal does not work well for darker skin is because the laser responds to hair because of the color, and on lighter complexions, it is easier for the laser to see the difference between light skin, and dark hair.
But in darker complexions, the laser has a difficult time distinguishing between the hair and the skin, which can cause many problems, including burning!

they usually have the latest equipment. The problem is the contrast like Erica says, so if you are super pale with blonde hair, it is also a concern for the laser. The laser needs to see a major difference between skin color and hair color. I happen to have the best situation being a ghost complexion wise and having really thick, dark hair (awesome! so I basically needed laser hair removal from the day I was born!)
Anyway I was told by my derm, Michael Eidelman at West Village Dermatology, (NYC, 13th street at that hospital) that they got in a machine that works with lower contrast, and since he specializes in working very slowly I would trust him. His assistant has super dark skin and super dark hair and she said she had it done and it was fine. They also can use a VERY low setting and test you on body parts not as "important" as your face.
HTH and please post if you find other people who perfrm this, we should get an article on the site about it too!

Have you considered electrolysis? I, too, am not a good candidate for laser hair removal: I have blonde hair on my legs, face (where I've got an abundance of peach fuzz thanks to a hormone imbalance) and arms, and was told that a laser wouldn't be able to detect the hair. Even my waxer misses hair on my thighs when I go in for a leg wax, which is annoying because even if she can't see it, I sure as heck can!
