Added Nov 30, 2008I have so many holiday parties to go to. Some are during the day, and some are at night...how can I create a look that will translate well at a lunchtime holiday party and transition into a night time affair as well?

one thing i have noticed is that a simple black dress can be transformed by a pair of hot shoes and a bag so I will bring in a change of shoes/bag and that can do the trick. But I am pretty conservative at work and sometimes the black dress is like...appropriate for church type of dress. ;)
I haven't found a way to really make a transition work and not be either over the top for work or too conservative for play.
I think maybe a sexier top under a blazer and jeans could also work...and then take the blazer off when you leave the office?
Any other ideas?

Accessorize: Accessories are small and easy to carry around, and can transform outfits instantly.
Having a fancy scarf and strand of pearls (or a cool designer neck piece) can jazz up conservative office fare for your upcoming night out.
For on-the-go-change-on-a-whim types:
A hot, short dress underneath, a classy and chic blazer over, with a nice scarf (to sharpen up the blazer AND hide any cleavage). Fitted trousers on the bottom for daytime. At night, you can decide whether or not to take off the trousers depending on how short your party dress is. Roll up the trousers tight (so it doesn't get too wrinkled when you dance your night away) and tuck away in a good day-and-night bag... this is how airline stewardesses do it.
For lazier-I-hate-fitting-rooms-types:
As Julie mentions, the jeans, sexy-top, and nice blazer combo works best. I like doing a fitted lace cami or some form of full-torso lingerie under the blazer. Again, classy scarfs and accessories will make many boudoir pieces publicly presentable.

I agree with the black dress but have also found sometimes just adding a jacket and change of shoes (flat for fun and high for evening) make the difference without having to buy a whole new outfit.
