Added Sep 28, 2009I have 4 girls, so this is always on my radar. At what age do you feel it's appropriate for girls to begin wearing makeup? I'm talking subtle makeup, not the lined "raccoon eyes" that a lot of junior high girls think is cool!

oooo boy, I was not allowed until high school Senior year!!!! I was allowed to get facials and to work on my skin, so I did not need makeup.
I am not opposed to makeup on high schoolers but not younger than that...why would they need it? Makeup unless it is concealer for zits would be something to attract...men...right? So what the heck is someone in high school or younger doing with that?

Hmm... I had an older sister and therefore found it a little easier to convince my mom to let me ease in to makeup. I think lip gloss and a little natural toned mascara is fine for a middle schooler... for eyeliner and everything else I had to wait till high school!

I think it's fine for middle schoolers to wear lip gloss, but that's about it. High school is all about fitting in so it would have to be whatever is popular with her group. I never had the time or energy to do more than eyeliner and lipstick in high school and most of my friends didn't wear much of anything.

I started wearing makeup in middle school. Lipgloss and eyeliner in 6th grade. It seems young looking back on it now, but where I was raised (Michigan) makeup was a big deal. Even when I return home now I notice women wear more makeup there than they do in here in NYC.
I guess as long as it appears natural, it's fine to start in Middle School. It's when young girls start to look like Miley Cyrus that things start getting a little weird. There is a line between woman and teenager, and when it gets blurry with excessive makeup, "mature" clothing and high heels, that's when messages get crossed.
I think young ladies these days are growing up too fast. Pressures of the media don't help either. When I was a teenager my role model was Olivia Newton John (the Xanadu day). Alas, not the same as Megan Fox *sigh.*

I've always enjoyed makeup - in fact, if I could pick another career path, I would probably work as a makeup artist - and thus began toying around with my mom's secret stash of Halloween makeup when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I was never allowed to wear it out of the house (except on Halloween, of course), and upgraded to lip gloss, waterproof mascara and stick concealer when I was a sophomore in high school. My mom never wore much makeup, and still doesn't - I think that had an effect on me, for sure. Ironically, it took me awhile as an adult to be able to leave the house without makeup (once I started getting into it - the liners and powders and primers, oh my!) several years ago, but I'm fine with it now, and use less now than I did at 21 or 22. I think promoting beauty and strength from within can't start early enough - it's the best thing any woman can apply to herself, no matter what her age.

Intorductory to Make-Up, Shaving, Perfume, & Purses! (Summer before the Beginning of 7th Grade) Subtle Make-up is definitely apporopriate around this age. "Loose powder foundation, Lip Shine, or even a bit of masacara." Influenced by T.V., Friends, & Older Siblings this is the age girls start to try and develop their own sense of being & originality (if not already). If they haven't already started hounding you about letting them wear it, Don't bring it up... The question will come eventually. When asked, present wearing Make- Up as a "privelage" that comes with resposibility and can be easily taken away if they are not being proactive in their skincare duties. Teach them that when wearing Make-Up it is essential to wash their face before Applying it and again When they are about to go to sleep. Show your girl's The proper way to clean their brushes and avoid bacteria back-up (This Will Help Avoid Acne later on in High School..)
Introductory to First school dances, Graduation, Co-Ed Parties! Junior High School. (8th Grade) Your Cover Girl!! This Year is the Year of Creative Experiment with Make-Up. They'll want to look extra beautiful for all of the Good-Bye Photos, and Graduation Pics. Experience this with your daughter as opposed to going against it, She'll appreciate your support and interest!
Teach her how to apply her Make-up (the right way).... you wouldn't want your daughters walking around with Raccoon eyes now would you?? :)
Hope this Helps!!
