Added Oct 27, 2009I started Dr. Mark Hyman's "The Detox Box" program yesterday and so far, so good. (Hyman is the same guy who wrote "Ultraprevention" and "Ultrametabolism" and I've also seen him on public television - very solid.) The focus of his detox program is on getting rid of toxins, fixing your gut, enhancing circulation, providing liver support (where detoxification takes place), and also detoxing your mind, heart and spirit. I just recently got laid off along with several other colleagues and I can already see this is a excellent way to avoid dwelling on my loss and instead taking myself in a positive new direction. Last night I slept like a baby - the first night of the detox. The program includes journaling, yoga, leisurely walks, aerobics, dry brush lymphatic cleansing, hydrotherapy (which includes a soaking bath at night with epsom salts, baking soda and lavender oil). My goal is to get through 14 days on the program. I'll post more as the days progress.

I haven't heard about this, Lori--I'm eager to hear more!
Also, I'm not familiar with dry brush lymphatic cleansing. Could you explain what that is?

Thanks for that video. I even was given a brush like the one she uses that I always figured was to be used wet because it was stiff. I'm going to try it.

So far, so good. It's important to write everything down in a detox program like this. The one complaint I have about this detox is that everything is printed on individual cards instead of a reference-able bound book. You really have to carefully read everything and then understand how the instructions translate to each hour in a day. I happen to be not working right now and so I can focus a bit on the instructions but I can see how tricky it might be to follow when working a FT job.

I had been doing well on The Detox Box detox program but when friends generously invited us to their resort vacation home for an extended weekend, I've found myself struggling to hang on to the program, at least "to the letter." During this detox, really the only "normal" food that can be eaten are fish, steamed vegetables and brown rice and so eating out every day and night with our friends has presented some challenges. I've been doing okay but last night I went off-program and had whole wheat bread rolls and today's lunch consisted of pizza and salad. And then someone broke open the Baked Lays Potato Chips - I've had too many already!
I also need to move more but it's hard (or more of an excuse!).
However, even here I haven't had a drop of coffee (my worst vice + the biggest reason why I did this detox) and my skin looks radiant (no doubt from the omega-rich flax borage oil required in the rice protein shakes).
My circulation is also great - my hands are warm! They are NEVER warm!
More later.

I'm back home, after being away for the past few days with friends and am now entering my 2nd week of The Detox Box detox program. As I said in my previous post, got derailed over the weekend by eating things not on the detox (hard to be the odd man out, though I was good about staying on-track with the supplement/shake schedule - I just added bad stuff to it!). We'll see how this 2nd week goes. My husband is now back home and may not like the strict evening meals of fish, rice and veggies. Trying to stay motivated and also eliminate a few of my other bad habits (like watching TV and surfing the Internet!). Going to sign off now and go a few "laps" on the treadmill to boost my metabolism. More later.

It's been two weeks since I began The Detox Box detox program. I committed to 14 days and I am now nearing the end. It's been a great experience. The biggest benefit is that I seem to have eliminated caffeine. Funnily enough, I was pretty good about staying away from it too. It was likely more of a habit than an addiction to simply hold a cup of coffee in my hand every morning, since my husband continued to consume it in my presence without me flinching. I simply had a decaffeinated green tea with him. My biggest challenge is that I didn't move around enough. Yoga, long walks and a form of aerobic activity are important to this particular program and I did not do them consistently (I came down with bronchitis the week before I began the detox and I am just now pushing past it. I do think the detox enabled me to minimize the symptoms but it has hung in for nearly 3 weeks now. My naturopath is helping me get rid of it.) Overall, this was a fantastic program. I felt I was really nourishing my body and soul. One thing - the detox itself is very structured. What it does not include is a structured exit plan to ease your way out (there are general guidelines but not a specific plan) and it's not entirely clear about the things you can (and should) continue doing, such as the daily dry brushing.

Nearing the end of the first week of "Phase II" of the Detox Box program. Phase II is the reintroduction phase, where you're supposed to gradually re-introduce foods not allowed during "Phase I" of the program. You're supposed to introduce foods in the following order: citrus, nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and potatoes), corn, soy, nuts, eggs, gluten and dairy. So far this week, I've added a few nightshades (tomatoes and peppers - no potatoes), nuts and eggs. This reintroduction phase is important to follow - and do one group at a time - so that you can gauge how sensitively your body reacts to them. Frankly, I may opt to eliminate gluten and dairy altogether - I suspect these are the cause of cause bloating for me, particularly the dairy.
