Added Nov 27, 2008ok look i know that there are no calories in water, be it gaseous or non (mineral or not), but seriously since I've been drinking a lot of these perrier things, I feel like I am retaining water. Could it be this or something else? any ideas. Thanks ladies for any info.

I love Perrier water as well, and it's so good..that I do not believe it is calorie free! As my grandmomma Emma would say : "Must be something in the water!" :)

Drinking carbonated beverages cause gas in the digestive tract. Most detox diets ask you to avoid any carbonation at all. some people find it irritates their digestive tract over time. of course, the cola industry has sponsored many studies that find carbonation isn't bad for digestion. Not a suprise!

Thanks for the explanation Gloria. As an avid imbiber of sparkling water, I've long-wondered if this is true.

on how much you drink and whether you drink carbonated water exclusively. i would suggest that you not drink it exclusively, as those bubbles just seem unnatural sometimes. also keep away from the salty snacks.

I personally and professionally see no major issue in the consumption of carbonated water. However, I do see issues around drinking carbonated beverages that contain sugars. When it comes to having any food or beverage I suggest doing so in moderation. Being mindful of what we take into our bodies is important.

When water is carbonated, it actually causes you to DRINK LESS WATER. This doesn't mean you shouldn't drink your Perrier, but definitely be mindful of your H2O intake and make sure you're getting enough. Being adequately hydrated will prevent water retention.

A regular to S. Pellegrino, I just discovered a new sparkling water called Apolinaris that totally got me hooked.
Carbonated sodas (sweetened) definitely make me a little gassier than if I didn't drink it, but somehow carbonated drinks make me feel like my digestive system could "work faster".
Carbonated mineral water and sparkling waters like S. Pellegrino and my new found favorite, Apollinaris, allow me to savor my food over a longer period of time, slowing down the rate of ingestion, and cleansing my tastebuds.
I can't really think of drinking carbonated water outside of it being an accompaniment to a meal, if I'm thirsty and on the go I drink tea, water, or juices...
If carbonated water has an effect on weight it must be because it allows me to enjoy my food more and eat more!

I've heard that in moderation carbonated water will actually be more beneficial that regular water in quenching your thirst. It also has more calcium than regular water. I wonder if the person I heard this from assumed it quenched thirst better because they ended up drinking less? Or, stopped them from feeling thirsty for some odd reason? I consider Pellengrino a treat like most people think of soda (pop) so I don't drink enough to see any weight/bloating issues. But it does make me feel FULL! Somehow, this must all be related. Know of any scientific studies I could look up?

I love sparkling water, but I have also felt like it might be contributing to water retention. I believe it may have more to do with the gassiness of the water leading to a bloated feeling than actually retaining water since the sodium content is minimal.
Interesting about the erosion of tooth enamel... I never knew that!

Julie--I'd be interested in hearing what has happened for you since this thread started.
I can only offer my experience. I'm usually drinking things different than water because water has become "boring" to me. I eventually get bored of the replacement, though, and go back to water. It's cyclical for me, and I figure at least I'm detoxing and hydrating.

I looove S.Pellegrino mineral water - and it has calcium in it. I find it settles my stomach if I am feeling bloated and icky.

I love Pellegrino with fresh lemon if I'm out at a bar and not in the mood to drink, but other than that, I avoid carbonated beverages completely. They don't get me bloated, but they don't make me feel good, either. Nothing feels as good as the cleansing, refreshing feeling of finishing a large glass of water.

I can't recall where I read this or I would cite the article, but after reading that carbonation led to increased "bloating" I cut sodas out of my diet and noticed an immediate improvement in that bloated feeling.
