Added Nov 05, 2008I like a good detox to kick start a diet or just cleanse. I've tried Joshi's 21 day detox and it was great ,but also intense and too long for more than once a year. I'm looking for a three day or maybe one week program. There are so many out there that I don't know where to start. any recommendations?

The Spring Resort and Spa in Palm Springs has a great detox program offered a few times a year. I believe Jan Minter is the woman who runs the detox/fasting program. They typically run 5-7 days. What a great way to relax! I believe that working with a professional to do a more intense detox that is personalized for your needs is the way to go!

For one to do at home a lot of people I know do the "lemonade diet" where you mix lemon with cayenne and maple syrup. It's actually pretty tasty, and even if you can't dedicate more than a few days to it you still feel the results. Maple boosts your metabolism, as does the capzasin in the cayenne. But the cayenne also acts a bit like a laxative/diuretic so be careful when you time this one.

I like to detox at home following a trusted favorite book rather than do it at a spa.
Self justification: it's more private and I can deal with my own "messiness" when it comes to detox.
With programs that work I will notice temporary "bad breath", "body odor", and frequent bathroom trips... I also may break out, experience insomnia or sleep a lot.
In any case not all detox programs will have the above "side effects" but it's not hard AND it is fun to come up with your own.
Try wheat grass (you can make your own, or get it at a Jamba Juice type establishment, as long as it's organic and fresh squeezed) shots.
When I feel particularly "polluted" and need to deep cleanse,
I like to do 2oz wheat grass first thing in the morning with a little bit of black coffee, and plenty of green tea and sugar free / fresh citrus juices).
This is also a great opportunity to eat lots of sprouts and raw organic fruits that are full of enzymes.
If you want to do a FULL detox, try a Vipassana Retreat. Vipassana is a non-profit, worldwide organization that promotes an ancient form of meditation. You go on a 10 day retreat in a VERY far out place (usually a cabin built by members in the woods), and you are on a strict no-talking, no-eating-past-noon, always meditating mode for 10 days straight.
It's really hard, but the food provided there is EXTREMELY clean (organic, vegan, and usually full of sprouted vegetarian proteins or asian vegetarian varieties of soy dishes, depending on the host of that particular retreat) AND by the end of the retreat on the 10th day you will be SOOOO proud of yourself for having pulled the whole thing off!
