Added Nov 07, 2008I love going to the Chiropractor. Sometimes I may not even feel pain or pressure, but after that glorious crack, I'll still feel a sense of relief. Even after all my praises for chiropractors, I still have a few friends and family members you are afraid to visit a chiropractor. My brother is one. Even though he suffers from chronic back pain from a minor car accident, he's afraid that a chiropractor will possibly make it worse. Honestly, it's really that he's fearful that the doctor will break his neck.
Has anyone had a fear like this and how did you get over it?

Personally, chiropractors bring me major relief. I am a little hesitant to get my neck adjusted with the normal, cracking technique, but it feels great on my back. Fortunately, there is another chiropractic option.
Shop around for a chiropractor that uses "actuators" instead of physical adjustments. The actuators do the same job with a little device that snaps you into alignment. With each snap, your body makes subtle adjustments in reaction to the actuator, and as a result, your body aligns itself.
I have walked (or limped) into a chiropractor's office, and with a 5 minute, pain-free actuator treatment I walked out pain free. This of course, isn't the case with all ailments, but if something is just a little out of alignment, these kinds of adjustments are remarkable, and totally painless.

I was VERY skeptical of chiros and was fairly judgemental when I talked about them. (I called them "chiroquackters".)
But I'm eating my humble pie now. The greatest thing about our chiro is that in the initial visit you watch a video which discusses all the normal fears--danger or adjustments, can chiros write scrips, what is their training, etc. This might be a new thing for newer chiros. All I can say is I was the one who ended up suffering for not going previously.

Word of mouth, a personal referral & perhaps speaking to the provider in advance & scheduling an initial consultation so the practitioner can establish their expertise with the person might allay some of their fears. If you spoke with them beforehand about the person's reluctance, you might ask them to explain their treatment philosophy or approach.
The demeanor of the person may may an impact too- I've had big bears of chiropractors, and smaller more nimble ones. If someone is physically imposing, that may either be a barrier or make the newbie feel safer.
They probably need the gentlest of introductions & an exceptionally body-aware one.
If people aren't open to things, there's no way to force it, though.
