Added Jul 02, 2009In light of a recent discussion and if you're not opposed to tooting your own horn, could you tell us if you've given blood before? You deserve our congrats!

Toot! I used to give every month, but it's been awhile. I really enjoy it, actually. Needles and blood don't bother me, and it seems like such a necessary resource. And I like getting a juice box afterward!

Sorry, can't toot my own horn here. I've had way to many close calls with fainting, it's just not worth all the trouble I cause. I have a tremendous amount of respect for those of you who are nurses....I don't think I could ever be a nurse or work in the medical field.

I'm with Stacy - I give whenever it's convenient to me. I'm not bothered by the needles or blood and I feel like I'm doing good.

I used to give blood on a regular basis until a few years ago. Now my veins collapse and you can't give blood using little butterfly needles because they can't collect it fast enough for it to be viable with the smaller needles. I've tried again a few times over the last couple of years but the same thing happens, my vein collapses before they get a full bag of blood.
I encourage anyone who can donate to get out and do so. Many local blood banks also let you donate toward a friend or family who will need blood for an operation etc. so that they are not charged for the blood when they use some from the "bank".

The difference between the number of times I've attempted to give blood versus the number of times I've actually given blood is pretty vast. I have iron deficiency anemia and low blood pressure, and despite any dietary changes (eating lots of iron rich foods the night before) or medication (I've taken iron supplements under the supervision of my physician for 14 years), I often just miss the cutoff mark to donate - and even when I barely pass, am often instructed to "give at my own risk." I also suffer from intense menstrual cycles, and have a petite frame, so I don't have much to begin with as it is. So, I often can't or don't donate, even if I try, and I had to force myself to stop feeling badly about it because I try to give back in other ways.
On a side note, my acupuncturist is against my donating blood at all. I'm not sure if this is part of her treatment regimen for me specifically, or if it's a view held by most acupuncturists, but it makes sense, if you've got circulation/blood flow problems like I do.

I do whenever I can because I am O positive- blood for everyone! Plus, I like the free cookie and the sticker.
