What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Dr. William Sutherland founded the practice of Craniosacral Therapy, also called Cranial Osteopathy. He believed that the visible sutures on the skull were proof of contraction and expansion of its connective membranes. In other words, our craniums are capable of movement akin to the breathing performed by the lungs.
Because of this, Dr. Sutherland felt that gently massaging the skull would create a wave of tension release from the skull through the neck to the base of the spine via the body’s craniosacral system. Today, craniosacral therapy is a rapidly growing treatment at spas worldwide.
Craniosacral therapy treatment focuses on three things:
- The cranium, or skull
- The spine
- The sacrum, the triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine that connects the pelvis
Practitioners work with the spinal column, nerves, fluids, and connective tissues along the spine that form a continuous membrane capable of moving as a single unit. The movement of this unit is called craniosacral rhythm (CSR). Craniosacral therapists look for disturbances in the CSR flow, and manipulate the membrane until a continuous, healthy flow is restored. Practitioners claim that restoring the CSR to a normal rhythm allows the body’s natural healing powers to resume functioning. While the therapy is readily available and many people report being helped by craniosacral therapy, there is currently no scientific support to the claims of this form of healing.
What Happens in a Craniosacral Therapy Session?
A session with a Craniosacral therapist generally lasts between 30 and 90 minutes. The recipient lies down on a massage table, fully clothed, while the therapist checks the flow of CSR. There are several different techniques that may be used during the session:
- Energy Cyst Release
The therapist locates and gently releases energy cysts or energy blockages causing disruption in tissues and organs. - Direction of Energy
The therapist passes energy blockages from one of her hands through the patient and into her other hand. - Myofascial Release
Using a slightly stronger touch, the therapist releases tension in the body’s fascia, connective tissue. - Position of Release
The patient’s body is positioned as it was when the injury occurred and held in that position. The claim is that when CSR stops suddenly, the trauma is released. - Somatoemotional Release
Using the power of the mind, energy “locked in the tissues” can be released.
Craniosacral therapy can be used when pain and injury make other hands-on approaches intolerable. Each patient responds differently. Not all therapists have a background in physiology, anatomy, and osteopathy, so it is important that you consult your physician about this holistic healing method before undergoing craniosacral therapy.

I have never heard of this treatment before, but now I am very interested in trying it out. Thanks!

I had my first treatment in NYC about a year ago. I came home to Salt Lake City and was overjoyed to find my "home spa" had a therapist who does CS. Now I have it done every few months. It is an amazing treatment...at the very least, who doesn't like having their head rubbed??

This sounds like its a combination of massage and energy healing with maybe a little unofficial chiropractic thrown in. I love getting my hair washed when I go to get it cut. The young woman who does it now is fantastic. She doesn't just wash the hair, she massages my scalp. I really should tip her more.
Anyway, I have a feeling I would thoroughly enjoy it. A little scalp rubbing, some energy balancing, a spine massage. Who could pass that up?Time to do a little research. Can anyone recommend someone in the NY/NJ area?

I would love to try this therapy. How do you find qualified people?

This article at least reinforces the need for healing touch, whether it is from a practitioner or a loved one. I LOVE it when my daughters play with my hair!
I also have a hairdresser who really gets into the scalp and almost scrubs (in a good way). She says that during her training, the "Blue Bettys" would come in and make sure everyone knew they'd better be getting deep down with their washing.

yes very good

It's good to see an article explaining the benefits of Craniosacral Therapy. I see a practitioner who uses CST as just one of many treatments, and CST is always my favorite -- very relaxing and beneficial.

We had a one day class in this in Massage School - didn't seem like enough. I'm really intrigued by it. I don't like Massage for myself in general - I guess I would if the back was skipped and it was mostly stretching! - but I think this would be relaxing enough to have seven days a week!

I've only had this a few times and it was amazing. (Touchy-feely woo-woo alert.) Once I had it done and really felt like I was traveling through my body, visiting all the places that had had some trauma or injury or hurt, even into childhood. It was a trip I'd repeat.

I've been looking for this therapy and I haven't found a place in Chicago yet. But, I did go get a head massage and it was great. It releaved a lot of stress that I had in the neck and upper back along the spinal column. I think this therapy is probably very benificial!

wow! Never heard of this! I know I would love it, as along with everyone else, I love the feel when my hair dresser washes my hair and massages the scalp. My acupuncturist told me that the top of the head needed to be massaged to recieve more blood (to prevent the feeling dizziness when I stand up suddenly) she also showed me a place at the back of my neck that needed massaging. I would much rather someone else do the massage. I can understand how fantastic this massage must be. I will be on the look out for a Craniosacral Therapy specialist.
Would be nice if someone would post sites where they received this therapy. I might make it a special spa treatment trip!!!!!
