or those seeking cutting edge spa treatments, techniques and technologies the medical world can offer, the Medi Spa is the answer. A hybrid of medical clinics and day spas, the Medi Spa offers treatments administered under the supervision of a medical doctor to ensure the highest quality result is delivered in a safe and professional manner.
What to Expect
Most Medi Spas may be low on atmospheric detail but high on treatment efficacy. The focus here is serious skincare so ambient extras such as candles, fresh flowers, and Buddha statuettes are kept to a minimum. Though Medi Spas tend to have a more clinical setting than day spas, many still offer relaxing services like massage and body treatments. Prices for Medical Spa treatments like laser and skin tightening are higher because the equipment, or injectable solutions are expensive.
The Vibe: Clinical, Modern, No-Fuss
Perfect For: Perfectionists, Seekers of Eternal Youth, The Celebrity Obsessed.
The Medi Spa Enthusiast Profile
You could get lost in a magnifying mirror for hours. SPF30 or higher is a daily essential, as are wide brimmed hats, self-tanning products, and umbrellas meant for the shade. If there is a new technology that tightens, firms or improves, you’ll endure a hefty price tag to turn back the clock. You take care of your body and want your skin to reflect that same youthful glow. The ageless appearance of celebrities motivates you to return to the technician for the latest and greatest developments in skincare.
Medi Spa Treatments
Medical Spa menus vary, but beyond traditional spa treatments like massages and basic facials, Medi Spas may offer laser treatments, IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments, microdermabrasion, injectables like Botox and other fillers, aggressive chemical peels, skin tightening, and laser hair removal.
Popular Therapies Include:
- Chemical Peels – Glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or malic acid peels of varying concentrations are applied to exfoliate dead skin cells on the surface to promote cellular proliferation, which generates new brighter fresher and smoother skin.
- IPL - Intense Pulsed Light therapy is used to fade age spots or discoloration on the face, hands or chest. Pulses of broad-spectrum light (UV filtered out) safely zap discolorations and fine lines. This process boosts collagen production and smoothes out the skin.
- Injectable Treatments (Botox, Juvederm, and Radiesse) – Use of injectable dermal solutions to smooth wrinkles or contour the face. Benefits include fast acting wrinkle reduction and a more youthful appearance.
Laser Hair Removal - Use of laser energy that produces heat in the hair, which is transferred to the hair follicle, which in-turn produces inflammation, and this inflammation sends a signal to the hair follicle to go into the resting (telogen) phase. Several treatments are required to produce long-term hair reduction.

P.S. More and more spas are integrating medical cosmetic procedures into their treatment repertoire, just make sure you are working with a licensed medical professional. I've noticed many of the Medi Spas in NYC have a "don't ask don't tell" policy when unlicensed therapists are on board, which may save you money, but you have to be comfortable with a lay administering injectables into your skin! Make sure to ask upfront!

I think you know what type of spa resonates with you, and I now that this type just doesn't resonate with me. I'm all about luxury and medi-spas aren't usually luxurious.

I'm actually a patient of the dermatology practice at Northeast Dermatology (Andover, MA), and have a slight protest to offer. First, their practice is primarily that - standard dermatology - with board-certified dermatologists and nurses on staff to address dermatological issues. They only recently (within the past 3 or 4 years) branched out to include a med spa; my doctor, whom I won't name, kept pushing microdermabrasion on me during my last annual appointment when all I wanted was to make sure I was taking proper care to avoid skin cancer. Tread lightly here - and realize that the practice is set up as two different businesses and if you wish to get a dermatology appointment (versus a med spa appointment), you'll need a referral from your PCP and patience - new patients can expect up to a 6-month wait to see a doctor.
